Usance Letter of Credit | Finance against Letter of Credit

September 12, 2012 2 comments

Most of the Exporters or Suppliers who receive Letter of Credit as the payment instrument are most likely interested in getting the Finance against Letter of Credit.

Letter of Credit Discounting

In this article we will discuss that whether its possible to discount the Usance Letter of Credit or Not ? If yes then how and what are the terms and conditions.

The Usance Letter of Credit is in common practice and the purchaser is always is interested in issuing this traditional Letter of Credit. But when it comes to the Supplier or Seller part, most of the supplier are not aware of the usance Letter of Credit. They are mostly lured by the fly by night operators who claims that they can help to discount the Usance Letter of Credit and can make eighty percent payment available to the supplier against the usance Letter of Credit.

With these words most of the suppliers get into the agents words and start the documentation with them and waste their money and time behind such agents. Always note that there is no such facility available that a bank or financial institute will provide you upfront as packing credit before supplying the goods against the Usance Letter of Credit in name of discounting.

Never listen to such agents how much you know them or having good past business relation with them. In some cases you must have heard that a particular supplier got the funds once he received the  usance Letter of Credit in his account. This is true and possible, but pre discounting of Usance Letter of Credit is not possible.

The supplier may have good business relation with the bank, either he has got his limits available with the bank or may have hypothesized his fixed assets to get the funds which he can utilize for procuring the funds.

So be carefull from any road side talks. The best way is, discuss everything in detail before accepting the Usance Letter of Credit from your clients. If your bankers are ready to support you, go ahead.
